Sandy Paws Doggy Daycare

 

 

Training

  1. Where used, training methods or equipment will not cause pain, suffering or injury. Training will be reward based (i.e. reward desired behaviour and ignore unwanted behaviour).

Routines discussed and agreed with owner.

  1. Routine grooming and health regime will be agreed with the owner (i.e. coat, teeth, ears, eyes, nails, parasite check.
  2. Diet and monitoring: The client shall provide sufficient food and any treats for their dog (s) for the duration of the service. 

The general condition of all long stay dogs will be monitored and dogs displaying significant weight loss/gain will be evaluated by a veterinarian and treated as necessary.

Veterinary advice will be followed if feeding debilitated, underweight, sick dogs or those with specific dietary requirements.

  1. Enrichment: A programme will be agreed with the owner, setting out enrichment, both inside and outside. This will include grooming, socialisation and play. All dogs will receive appropriate toys and/or feeding enrichment unless veterinary advice states otherwise. Potential competition between dogs will be avoided when feeding enrichment takes place and use of items will be monitored. Items will be checked daily for safety and damaged items will be removed from use.
  2. Exercise: Written consent will be required to enable a dog to be walked outside the home environment. Including permissions for the dog to be walked with other dogs from its household.

Exercise will involve two 20 minute walks per day as appropriate for its age and health or one walk and a session of positive interactive play for 20 minutes.

Consideration will be given to life stage, physical and mental health and the breed of the dog.

Dogs will be walked on a lead at all times.

Policies and procedures

  1. Dogs under the age of 1 year old are not accepted. 
  2. Unneutered dogs are not accepted. (exceptions based on temperament and behaviour towards female and neutered dogs).
  3. Introducing new dogs into the home: A trial period will be required to ascertain the dogs suitability for daycare and boarding. 
  4. For daycare a morning or afternoon session is required. For boarding, an overnight trial is required before an extended stay of three days or more. 
  5. Dogs will be introduced while wearing a lead. The dogs will be observed after arrival to identify abnormal behaviour - in particular dogs that are nervous or fearful of contact. 

Dogs will be allowed to have a choice of interaction or private space to acclimatize. When the dog is observed to be ready for interaction, this will be welcomed and encouraged. 

Dogs to be slowly introduced to other dogs. 

There will be continual observation of the dogs interactions with other dogs and people. 

Rooms will be available for dog separation and they will be monitored regularly. Behaviour will be observed and records kept of any signs of fear, anxiety or aggression

  1. Feeding regime: To be discussed and agreed with the owner.

Adult dogs will be fed at least once/twice per day and in accordance with the individual dogs needs.

Dogs will be separated for feeding unless written consent from owners has been received permitting otherwise.

Feed and water intake will be monitored and any problems recorded and addressed. Dogs will be monitored if they remain without appetite for longer than 24 hours and if there are concerns, veterinary advice will be sought.

Feed and drinking water will be unspoilt and free from contamination. 

Dry food will not be left out for more than 24 hours. 

Wet feed will be removed before the next feeding time.

Refrigeration facilities for feed storage will be provided. 

Feed will be stored away from risk of vermin and in appropriately cool and dry places.

Feed and drinking receptacles are capable of being cleaned and disinfected are non porous. 

Receptacles will be cleaned daily and disinfected at least once a week. 

If damaged they will be disposed of.

Constant fresh water will be provided daily in a clean receptacle and changed or refreshed as often as necessary.

Fresh water will be available at all times in each designated room.

Where feed is prepared on the premises, there will be hygienic facilities for its preparation, including hot and cold running water and storage.

Soap and hygienic hand drying facilities are available.

 

  1. Cleaning regime: All detergents and fluids will be used safely and in accordance with instructions on packaging.

All cleaning products with be fit for purpose and safe for people and animals: Disinfectant products are virucidal and bacteriocidal. 

Cleaning products will be stored in a locked cupboard, out of reach of animals. Every occupied room and dog area will be cleaned at the end of each day and when necessary throughout the day. 

Any standing water from cleaning or urine will be cleared immediately to avoid accumulation of pathogens.

Dogs will be removed from areas being cleaned until cleaned surfaces dry. 

Faeces and soiled bedding will be removed from all areas when necessary and soiled bedding, towels, blankets and toys removed immediately and washed.

Each occupied room and communal areas will be disinfected at the end of every day. Soiled bedding, towels, blankets will be removed immediately and washed. All beds washed once a week or at change of occupancy.

  1. Transportation: Transportation will be in accordance with existing legal requirements.

Dogs will be suitably restrained using a dog crate, dog guard or transport harness.

Vehicle is regularity cleaned and disinfected.

Dog crates large enough so the dog can stand, lie and turn around freely.

Dog will be out of direct sunlight and away from heating vents.

Dogs will never be left unattended in a vehicle where the temperature may risk the comfort and safety of the dog.

Journeys will include sufficient breaks for water, food and toileting.

 

  1. Prevention of and the control of the spread of disease: Appropriate isolation, in separate self contained facilities is available at a veterinary practice for the care of sick, injured or potentially infectious animals.

Dogs showing signs of infectious disease will not be allowed in any shared area including shared outside area. 

They will be transported to the named isolation area immediately.

All reasonable precautions will be taken to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases, pathogens and parasites.

An up to date veterinary vaccination record must be seen to ensure dogs have current vaccinations, including canine parvovirus, canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis (adenovirus), leptospirosis and any other relevant diseases.

Dogs must have been appropriately treated for external and internal parasites in accordance with veterinary advice before entry to the home.

If there is evidence of external parasites (fleas, ticks, lice) the dog will be treated with an appropriate product authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and licensed for use on animals in the UK. 

Treatment will be discussed with a veterinarian prior to administering. Consent from the owner is required.

Before a dog is admitted for boarding, all equipment to be used by or in relation to that dog will be cleaned and disinfected.

 

  1. Monitoring the health and welfare of the animals: All dogs will be checked at least once daily or more regularly as necessary to check for signs of pain, suffering, injury, disease or abnormal behaviour. 

Vulnerable animals will be checked more frequently.

Any signs of pain, suffering, injury, disease or abnormal behaviour will be recorded and the advice of (if necessary) of a veterinarian will be sought and followed.

If a dog is taken sick or injured the client will be notified immediately.

In the event the client or emergency contact is unreachable the service provider shall, if their own opinion the pet needs veterinary attention/treatment/opinion, make arrangements as necessary, in the best interests of the dog.

Any veterinary bills will be directly chargeable to the client.

 

  1. Death or escape of the animal: In the event of death, the owner (or emergency contact, if owner not available) will be contacted.

The registered or local veterinary practice will be contacted and the dog will either be collected by them or taken to them by the Service Provider.

If this is not immediately possible, the dog will be transferred and sensitively kept in a locked outbuilding until the next day when either the owner/emergency contact or the registered or local veterinary practice are able to collect the dog. 

In the event a dog escapes, all dogs will wear a tag stating they are boarding at Sandy Paws Doggy Daycare and showing our name, address and all contact numbers.

Measures to locate the dog will be carried out immediately, including contacting the local authority and local animal welfare groups.

 

  1. Contingency plan in the event of an emergency: Sandy Paws Doggy Daycare will take appropriate steps to protect all the people and animals on the premises in case of fire or in the case of breakdowns for essential heating, ventilation or filtration systems or other emergencies. 

In the event of fire: Entrances and fire exits are clear of obstructions at all times.

Suitable firefighting, prevention and detection equipment is provided and maintained in good working order.

There is one working smoke detector installed in a suitable location on each floor of the property,

There is a working carbon monoxide detector installed. 

In the event of breakdowns for heating, ventilation or filtration systems and the premises become uninhabitable, alternative accommodation is available. 

Consent (written consent from the owner required for the following).

  1. To not feed separately.
  2. Programme of enrichment.
  3. For outdoor areas to be used by more than one dog from different households.
  4. To administer preventative treatments or treatment for external parasites (fleas, ticks,lice).
  5. Which vet to be used (I.e. in case of emergency or other veterinary visit).
  6. For dogs from the same household to be kept together.

 

  1. Where a crate is part of the dogs normal routine, consent to use a crate
  2. Walking - consent to walk a dog outside of the home/yard environment, walk with dogs from other households.

 

Records to keep

  1. An assessment will be made of changes of behaviour for each dog (suffering stress, fear, aggression, anxiety).
  2. Up to date veterinary vaccination record (canine parvovirus, canine distemper, canine adenovirus/infectious canine hepatitis, leptospirosis).
  3. Details of each dogs relevant medical and behavioral history.
  4. Details of the dogs diet and any food related allergies.
  5. A record will be kept of feed and water intake and any abnormal faeces/urine habits.
  6. Mandatory trial familiarization session.
  7. An inventory of items particular to each dog will be kept. 

 

Register

  1. The dates of each dogs arrival and departure.
  2. Each dogs name, age, sex, neuter status, microchip number and description of its breed.
  3. Number and record of dogs from the same household.
  4. The name, address, telephone number and email address of the owner of each dog and emergency contact details.
  5. The name, address, telephone number and email of a contact for an emergency.
  6. The name and contact details of the dogs normal veterinary surgery and insurance details.
  7. Details of each dogs relevant medical and behavioral history.
  8. Details of any restrictions against exercise, including if they can be walked on/off lead and with other dogs.
  9. Diet and related requirements.
  10. Owner consent forms.

 

  1. A record of the dates of each dogs most recent vaccination, worming and flea treatments.
  2. Details of any medical treatment each dog is receiving.
  3. When outside the premises, each dog must wear an identity tag, which includes the licence holders name and contact details.
  4. All records will be backed up electronically and will be kept for at least three years from the start of the record.

 

Bookings

 

  1. All bookings shall be made by completing a booking form.
  2. Bookings are subject to completion of veterinary release form, owners consent form and payment made in accordance to the price quoted.
  3. For new clients, a consultation and temperament test will be required.
  4. Bookings may be accepted up to 24 hours before service begins, but payment in full will be required for all bookings made less than 14 days before service begins.

Suitable Environment

 

  1. Dogs will be accommodated within the home.
  2. Each dog or dogs from the same family will have access to a room for itself, where it can sleep, hide and be apart from other dogs.
  3. Indoor: There is sufficient space available to provide an individual sleeping area for each dog, with space to keep each dog separated if required.
  4. Outdoor: There is direct access to a secure, hazard free area. The outdoor area is owned by and only used by the service provider.
